Wedding photographs now arrive in an online gallery. It is convenient and easy to share, but ten years from now almost nobody will open a link to look back at that day. A wedding album is still the only form in which those images are actually looked at again: on the living-room table, with your parents, later with your children.
This guide covers what I explain to couples when they ask whether an album is still worth it and how to choose one: types of album, formats, paper, number of photographs, prices and timing.
Photo book, traditional album or fine art
These are three different objects, even though they often go by the same name.
- Photo book. Digital print on thin paper, with pages that turn like a book. It is inexpensive and light. Over the years the glued binding tends to give way and the colours are less stable. Good as a copy for relatives, less so as the main album.
- Traditional photo album. Printed on photographic paper, with rigid pages mounted on board and a lay-flat opening: the spread stays flat and a photograph can cross the fold without losing its centre. It is the standard for many studios.
- Fine art album. Pigment print on matte, acid-free cotton paper. The blacks are deep, skin tones are natural, and the surface can be touched without leaving fingerprints. The binding is done by hand and the cover is linen or leather.
I work with an Italian fine art lab: cotton-paper albums, hand-bound, which I lay out myself. I mention it because the layout matters as much as the print. An album assembled automatically by software puts the photos in order; one designed by the person who was there tells the story of the day.
Which format to choose
- Square, 30×30 cm. The classic: large, made for the table. It handles both horizontal and vertical photographs well.
- Landscape, 40×30 or 30×20 cm. It makes the most of landscapes and group photographs. The right format if you married somewhere with a big view, such as the Umbrian hills or the Val d'Orcia.
- Portrait, 20×30 cm. Closer to a magazine, easy to handle, fits on a bookshelf. It works well with portraits.
- Small formats, 20×20 or 15×15 cm. These are the copies for parents and witnesses: the same pages as the main album, scaled down.
The practical advice is to choose it by looking at your photographs, not at a catalogue. If the images you love most are horizontal, a vertical album will shrink them all.
How many photographs to include
An album tells a story; it is not an archive. For a full wedding I usually deliver between 500 and 800 images; an album holds between 60 and 120.
The right measure is two or three photographs per spread, with the occasional page given to a single image. Thirty spreads bring you to 70-90 photographs, enough to tell the whole day without crowding it.
The selection works like this: you mark your favourites in the gallery, I build the sequence and send you a draft to approve. I almost always add a few images you had not chosen: a detail, the grandparents' reaction, the empty room before dinner. They are the photographs that hold the others together.
Paper, cover and box
- Paper. Glossy has brilliant colours but reflects light and holds fingerprints. Matte is more elegant and reads well in any light. Cotton paper is the most stable over time.
- Cover. Linen, leather or velvet, with names and date engraved or embossed. A fabric cover with a restrained inscription ages better than a printed photograph.
- Box. It protects against dust and light. If the album has to last for decades, it is not a luxury.
How much a wedding album costs
Prices vary a great deal with the format, the number of pages and the materials. As a guide, in Italy:
| Type | Indicative price |
|---|---|
| Photo book | €80 – 250 |
| Traditional album | €300 – 700 |
| Handcrafted fine art album | €400 – 900 |
| Small copies for parents | €100 – 250 each |
In many collections the album is already included; in others it is added later, calmly, once you have seen the photographs. Mine are on the pricing page. For the overall cost, see my guide to what a wedding photographer costs in Italy.
When to order it
After the photographs have been delivered, when you can choose with the images in front of you. There is no deadline, but my advice is to do it within the first year: after that, between home, work and children, the album is the first thing to be put off.
Layout, approval of the draft and printing usually take four to eight weeks. If you want it for an anniversary or for Christmas, it is worth starting a couple of months ahead. For couples living abroad the album is shipped to your home.
The most common mistakes
- Too many photographs per page. Twelve small images are worth less than two large ones.
- Only the couple. Twenty years from now the most precious photographs will be the ones of your parents, grandparents and friends.
- No details. The dress on its hanger, the table, the empty church: they give the story room to breathe.
- Putting it off. An album ordered after five years is rare. One ordered in the first few months exists.
Frequently asked questions
Is a wedding album still worth it?
Yes, if you want your photographs to be looked at again. An online gallery is perfect for sharing, but files stay on a screen and formats change. An album printed on good paper opens without a password forty years from now.
How many photos go in a wedding album?
Usually between 60 and 120, across 25-40 spreads. A good average is two or three photographs per spread, with a few full-page images.
How much does a wedding album cost in Italy?
A photo book starts at around €80, a traditional album is between €300 and €700, and a handcrafted fine art album between €400 and €900, depending on format, pages and materials. In some collections it is already included.
What is the best format for a wedding album?
The 30×30 cm square is the most versatile. Landscape suits scenery and group photographs, portrait suits portraits. It is best decided once you have seen the photographs.
What is the difference between a photo book and a photo album?
A photo book is digitally printed on thin paper with glued pages. An album has rigid pages, photographic or fine art printing and a lay-flat opening. The colour rendering changes, and above all the lifespan.
Can you order the album years after the wedding?
Yes, as long as you have the high-resolution photographs. Do ask your photographer how long the files are kept: I keep a backup for twelve months after delivery.
